Boris and Bella’s Shopping Day Game

5 out of 5 based on 2 reviews

£28.00 plus VAT plus postage

This game encourages development of understanding and the ability to give detailed, complex instructions. The pack contains 6 base-boards and 12 food items (6 small and 6 big images.)

This game is ideal to reinforce key vocabulary and encourage children to understand directions with an increasing number of Information Carrying Words (ICWs).  For example:

  • Show the child just the basket and a variety of the fruits and vegetables all the same size and ask the child to ‘Put the carrot in the basket’ (1 x ICW)
  • Show the child the basket and trolley and a variety of the fruits and vegetables all the same size and say ‘Put the carrot in the basket’ (2 x ICW)
  • Show the child Bella with her basket, Bella with her trolley, Boris with his basket, Boris with his trolley and a variety of the fruits and vegetables all the same size and say ‘Put the carrot in Bella’s basket’ (3 x ICW)
  • If you use the above example and introduce the fruit and vegetables of different sizes, then the child has to understand a direction containing 4 ICWs.  For example ‘Put the big carrot in Bella’s basket

Contents:

  • 6 x A3 shopping base-boards: shopping trolley, shopping basket, Bella with a shopping basket and shopping trolley, Boris with a shopping basket and Boris with a shopping trolley
  • 6 x A5 shopping item cards laminated for the ‘big’ shopping items
  • 6 x A6 character shopping basket sheets laminated for the ‘small’ shopping items

This is a fantastic resource that has enabled us to work on following instructions in a fun and exciting way.

The children loved the Shopping Day Game and it fitted beautifully into our theme of Healthy Eating. It prompted discussion in the small group about fruit and vegetables and what they all liked and disliked to eat and what was healthy and unhealthy. It is a very helpful resource and it helps assess how much information a child can follow in a single instruction. A useful tool for evidencing where children’s needs lie and how much a child has progressed over the year with respect to attention and listening. This resource is bright and attractive and the instructions are clear and concise.
